Playday is the annual celebration of children’s right to play. This year’s Playday (Playday 2010) theme Our Place!, is encouraging children to play outside more and enjoy being part of their local communities. Research has been carried out to support the campaign, including a qualitative study, an opinion poll survey and this literature review. The literature review gathers the evidence, examining the importance of community play, patterns in children playing outside, and attitudes towards children playing. The term ‘community play’ used in the review refers to children playing out in their local streets and surrounding area near their homes. Literature wassourced through a systematic search using the Children’s Play Information Service (CPIS) at NCB.
